The opening ceremony of Tabriz 2018 was held at International Congress Center of Tabriz, today (Wednesday), 25th of April. The event is being held to celebrate “Tabriz 2018” and naming the city as the capital of Islamic tourism in 2018 by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in December 2015.
President Rohani, his cabinet members, tourism ministers from several countries and other guests attended the ceremony. Once the capital city of a number of dynasties of Iran and as one of the most developed cities of the region, Tabriz hosts a number of historical and religious sites.
The main aim of the event is to introduce Iran and especially Tabriz, show its cultural and historical capabilities, improve tourism facilities and plans in the area and promote the image of Iran’s tourism sector. The preparations for the event began months ago and involved artists and cultural activists as well as public sector. Furthermore, several live performances, exhibitions, workshops, meetings, concerts and handicraft exhibitions are to be held in Tabriz this year.
Declared as World Craft City by the World Craft Council in 2016, Tabriz is also known for its carpets used extensively in many posters for the event. A carpet exhibition will also be held in Tabriz in the following months and there will be tours available to introduce carpet weaving art and industry as well.
Monesan, the head of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran, has announced opening of new museums and also beginning of restoration process of more than 20 historical attractions in Tabriz.
